The Benefits of Facial Peels

Chemical facial peels have been used going back to Ancient Egypt. Cleopatra used sour milk to improve the appearance of her skin, according to some sources and lactic acid is an active ingredient in sour milk.

A chemical peel is a treatment used to improve skin texture and tone. A gentle acid is applied to the skin to lower the skin’s pH, which loosens the connections between the dead skin cells, inducing exfoliation and this in turn stimulates new cell growth. This process causes superficious layers of dead skin cells to peel off, revealing a more even and radiant complexion with a much smoother surface.

There are three levels of chemical facial peels – light (superficious), medium and deep, and all depend on the depth of penetration from the ingredients used. Light peels exfoliate your skin to various levels of the epidermis whereas medium peels treat through to the papillary dermis. Deep peels reach down to the mid-reticular dermis and require more downtime. There is also an increased chance of side effects, which can include photosensitivity, pigment changes and scarring.
